This one took a bit of digging, as there are multiple Sphinx Mountains. But, through my search, I discovered on the
National Gallery of Canada Website that around the time the painting was created (1928), Varley was living in Vancouver. Therefore, one can assume the painting is of Sphinx Mountain in Kootenay. A quick
google image search of this mountain seems to corroborate this idea, with the images having similar peaks and general shapes as the painting.
